Malaysia Completes F/A-18D Hornet Upgrade (2)

THE UPGRADES

Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS)

The JHMCS combines a magnetic head tracker with a display projected onto a pilot's visor, giving the pilot targeting information he needs to prosecute a target. It does this by synchronising the aircraft’s sensors with the user’s head movements so that they automatically point to where the pilot is looking. Pilots can also view any desired data (airspeed, altitude, target range, etc.) while ‘heads-up’, eliminating the need to look inside the cockpit during visual air combat.

AIM-9X Sidewinder

The AIM-9X continues the legacy of the AIM-9M in the RMAF F/A-18D Hornet inventory and operations. All AIM-9 versions are ‘heat-homers’, first designed back in the 1950s. AIM-9X now has all-moving control surfaces in the front and rear. While the AIM-9M is a third-generation infrared-guided missile, the AIM-9X is a fifth-generation, all-aspect missile. This digital, field reprogrammable missile has agile, thrust-vector control, a new processor, autopilot, a full envelope, off-boresight capability and high-resolution imaging infrared seeker. Combined with the JHMCS, the AIM-9X makes the RMAF F/A-18D Hornet a particularly lethal air-to-air adversary.

Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM)

The Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) is a guidance kit that converts unguided bombs into all-weather, ‘smart’ bombs. JDAM bombs are guided by an integrated inertial guidance system linked to a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. Now, the aircrew only has to insert the coordinates of the target, fly at very high altitudes and drop the bombs. Their delivery is unconstrained by the weather, smoke or any other atmospheric conditions that would normally prevent the delivery of laser- or optically-guided weapons.

Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared (ATFLIR)

ATFLIR is a multi-sensor, electro-optical targeting pod incorporating a thermographic camera. Compared with the previous Nitehawk FLIR used by the RMAF’s F/A-18D Hornets, ATFLIR now has a low-light television camera, target laser range finder, laser designator, laser spot tracker and IR marker. It is the world’s first Generation III Targeting FLIR, developed in response to a requirement for the aircrew to be able to acquire a target with improved target recognition and at a greater stand-off ranges.

  5. Just my thoughts on the RMAF F18 25x capability. First congrats. Indeed when they say quantum leap it sure is. With this u r able to operate more effectively. However maximise the capability is another thing u can leverage. Basically networking and integrate with other assets. The F18s can do that however what about other platforms hmmmm. It is still to early to tell so i wont speculate. Next is equipment there needs more munitions as there is little in it. Some of u will find it upsetting. Pigmoon guy made a vid once on the 25x upgrade and it shows something. There is a lack of weapons. Although yes the weapons use on the f18s before the upgrade are sufficient however the weapons of the 25x is not so. You can fly at most 2 sorties? Not good as u cannot fufil ops. Still it is early perhaps next year they will buy more then that will be good news. 3rd Is the squadron. U have newly upgraded 8 f18s. However it is just 8. 8 is too little and how effective u can fufil task is a problem. A squadron consist of minimum 18 fighters to 24 max. More than 24 is also ok as that will give a better chance of success but not too much u might as well form a 2nd squadron. So yes 8 f18s less than half of a squadron smth i am abit picky about. The 25x will do little to help as it is a matter of number of fighters. Lastly is engineering and maintainence. Well engineers will have more headaches lol. RMAF has quite a broad range of fighters and the mrca programme is goona be a fighter from europe should it be a success. Then more headaches. Try to standardise and get a standard and u can operate effectively. Overall good upgrade make full use of it and yes take care of the fighter. If anything bad happens (touch wood) then $$$ and lives go down. The BAE hawk accident was bad enough. Nobody wants this to happen for sure.

    1. mr ong...stop pretend that you care so much about rmaf.i know youre dont...and stop talking bullshit about what rmaf should do,what rmaf should have..i know youre are not willing to see they have all of that..i know singaporean are happy to see both rmaf & tniau keep on lagging behind Saf..so keep your hypocrite thought for yourselves...

      Hapus
    2. U misunderstood me. Why the assumption that i am against MY? Or perhaps it is you against singapore and hence u dislike the people and point at me?

      Hapus
    3. I think u r the hypocrite. I already said in the first sentence. My thoughts on the 25x capability. Not what should malaysia do and must listen to me. You are a soverign country you decide what u want to do. Im in no position to give u orders. Same for indos. This is based on my opinions. For me i have an interest in military developments and i,m keen on learning. I do not go out and brag and put people down nor do i create such fantasy thoughts at some trolls. Malaysia getting this 25x capability is gd as i said. This enhances their operational capability. Of course if there is one thing i admit is i have a bit bias towards indos and i apologise to fellow indonesians. The trolls are getting on my nerves i admit. What i hope is to see a stronger asean unity. Our leaders share this common goal and we should all aim for that. A rising china being assertive will do no good to any of ASEAN.

    4. Ben..TNI AL are not like sg navy which lack of experience..TI AL can face the China ALONE...the vessels are more updated n the weapon more powerful than sg navy...

      Hapus
    5. They have a a bigger navy that is true and can face china but for how long? Rmb we r talking about superpowers here. Indonesia also have more experience afterall i heard alot of crimes happen around their waters like illegal fishing and trespassing as well as terrorist threat with the situation in southern phillippines that My, Indo and Phil have a joint patrol as for training wise idk. Sg has a smaller navy which focus alot on a balance fleet. Although waters are save around sg they always go out to sea and train and would often participate in counter piracy and exercises very proactively often going overseas as well for training exercises.Sg knows very well that they lack experience and focus alot on training as that is the only way. However i disagree that the TNI ships are of higher standards, performance and technology. Formidable class frigates the new Littoral mission vessel, specialised marine craft, protector Unmanned surface vessel and archer subs are the reason.

      Hapus
    6. Ben.. dont take Iqram's word seriously. He made trolls over navy issue. That navy

    7. as I said before, rmaf wants the sh but the f***ing gov never care about the end user preferences. one of the upgrade for the flanker is intergrating link 9. this will allow the mkm, hornet, hawk(also included in the hawk upgrade) to work together in network centric like the rsaf though not as good as rsaf due to not having an awacs. I agree that we sometimes push the hawk too hard. on the lack of weapons for the hornet, rmaf have 30+ harpoon and the hornet can carry 4 harpoon in a sortie though I think will just equip it with two to allow it to carry amraam and aim9 as well. so yes, at most the hornet can only go for two maritime strike missions as that is what they are use for by rmaf. other than that, the hornet lack air to ground missile. the rmaf have quite a lot of aim 120 and aim 9 for just 8 hornet.

    8. @Ah Chan. Nah Luqman is a nice guy. Remember there is a lot to share around as we have much to know. Only thing we know is false are trolls who claim as if their elites are superman. Lol.

      Hapus
    9. @luqman. Dont u think that it will be a good opportunity to look for a new trainer that can also performs as a light attck? Hmmm the way they push the hawks shows that they want more. I think selling the hawks to a country that does not require such light attack roles would fit. The delay in the mrca is not because of cuts but re piroritise of areas that need to be addressed urgently in this case a capable ISR platform. This is not a bad move as they are doing the right thing to protect themeselves by preventing terrorist incursions. Hopefully the joint patrol is going well between the 3 countries. I cannot imagine if the men are fighting each other like what u see on blogs, post on facebook comment sections and youtube videos lol.

    10. Cheat code = suparman kipassusu

      Hapus
    11. @benjamin. yeah I think the fa50 is a perfect candidate for hawk replacement. rmaf priority list now is mrca than new trainer as we all know the mig's need to be replace as soon as possible. keeping them will just give more problems than benefits to rmaf though this might not happen soon since GE is next year.

What a curious decision in using Link 9. Do you know why they aren't using Link 11 or Link 16? Safe to assume these Hornets are equipped with the newer data links right?

      Hapus
    13. @irs,my mistake. it's actually link 16. I type link 9 by mistake.

      Hapus
    14. Think link u speak of is it regarding the networking of platforms and munitions? U guys know more about your assets. Idk much about mine. They keep quiet alot. When i see Malaysian defence lots of details. The kementah blogpost have details about current capability but of course the SAF doesnt share and rather keeps a secret on details. Only thing u will know is when it is published on their website or news. Kementah does go in detail by asking the SAF. Of course as a former defence corrospondent he knows well that they cant say much on sensitive equipment.
